What do you do when you can’t sleep? Watch TV, read a book, have a drink, meditate,…? There are countless options. I’m curious to see how many of you love their job so much and have coworkers who feel the same way, that they get together in the middle of the night and do what they love most – work! Crazy, right?
Can anyone even imagine what this would feel like? I’m not saying work all the time, abandon work-life balance or anything along those lines! I want to challenge you to look inside yourself. Do you love what you do? Not like, but really love!
Let me give you an example that helps to illustrate my point. Both my daughters are artists. And yes – my wife’s genes. They have an incredible passion and love for what they do. If they can’t sleep they want to create art. My older daughter can paint all night without ever getting tired. She loses track of time and is her happiest self when she creates art.
My younger daughter is a dancer. A few days ago, she and her college dance friends couldn’t go to sleep. They got together at 1 am and choreographed a dance that made my day! Watching my daughters gets me thinking and inspires me. They’ve become role models for me. They are my idols regarding love and passion for your profession.
Now, some of you might say:”Well that’s art. We are engineers, accountants, sales,… that’s different. Art is fun and a hobby. Of course I’d love to do that. But we have to do real work.”
Think about that for a moment. You chose what you do, you choose everyday. You don’t “have to” do anything. If you don’t love what you do, why would you want to continue doing it? It’s up to you! Nobody else will change things for you! Being an artist is as much a profession as any other and often a lot harder to make a living with.
If you love your profession, no matter how hard it is, you found your life’s purpose! Keep making changes until you are on the path towards your life’s purpose. It might change over time, and you’ll know what to do. You can either change what you do or change how you think about what you do.
I’m fortunate to have a wife and kids who inspire me. In addition, I’m part of the Continental family where I’m surrounded by many people with love and passion for what we do. We might not voluntarily get together at 1 am to work, but we certainly enjoy working as a team to tackle the next big challenge.
