Why would you select a company like Continental as your employer? Well, for one, it’s a global company that’s very successful in the market, has a great product portfolio, is profitable, and recognized by Fortune as one of the most attractive employers. These are some of the things you can easily find when researching your future employer.
Let me give you some additional insight that reflects an intrinsic benefit that many of us at Continental might take for granted. I personally experienced this when we lost my step son last year and years prior when my wife went through a life threatening high risk surgery. A few days ago, I finally realized how incredible this benefit is that we get to enjoy.
One of our core values is
Now, what does that even mean for People@Continental? In what I’m sharing here, one thing is for sure — it’s personal!
My story starts years ago when my wife went through a life threatening high risk surgery and continues into last year when we lost my step son. Both times, different location and team, I was blessed to be surrounded by people that supported me through the most challenging time my family and I had to go through.
Many of us have experienced losing a spouse, child, parent, or good friend. We all know how difficult it is to deal with your emotions while trying to focus on your work.
The other day, one of my colleagues shared with me what she experienced recently. She just started a new job within a new team and a new manager when her dad passed away. Worrying about what to do, emotionally shaken, and her family a long air plane trip away, she didn’t know how to deal with the situation. She experienced this tragic loss and needed to fly home for the funeral and be with her family. How do you even approach your manager? What will your new colleagues think? When she finally shared with her boss what was going on in her life, he and her coworkers immediately responded that she can take all the time she needs, they had this covered. She was so grateful and encouraged by the support she received! As she was sharing this experience with me, I realized — this is who we are and how incredibly powerful this benefit is within our company.
Over my years at Continental, several of my colleagues including myself have experienced the great support we receive when going through a difficult phase in our personal life. This can be the loss of a loved one, a life threatening situation, or any other challenge you might face. Your boss, your peers, and your employees — everybody is there for you. They all tell you to take care of yourself and your family first and not to worry about the business. Everybody steps up and fills in for you while you need to focus on yourself and your family! The key message typically is that Continental will still be here when you are ready to come back. We have you covered!
Loosing a loved one is an extreme situation. You might say, of course, that is what happens. However, others shared with me that they don’t experience this kind of support at their company. That’s why I felt I had to share this, realizing how fortunate we are. We should never take
At Continental you will experience a great level of support, no matter what you are going through. The key is to reach out and share with your colleagues what’s going on. They will be there for you!
