I immediately said yes when asked whether I wanted to join a team going to the “Women and Work” the 24th of May in Bonn. The “Women and Work” is a career fair for women where graduates as well as professionals can inform themselves about potential employers and can get in touch with them. In addition there are workshops, panel discussions and a company slam, where companies are able to present themselves to potential future employees in 60 seconds.
The day started early for us, at 6 o’clock in the morning we started in Hanover. We were five colleagues and met a sixth one at the fair. Our mood was good despite it being so early, we had croissants and music in the car and Barbara practiced her company slam with us.
Conti up close
Once arrived at the fair we put on our orange conti scarves, did a short briefing and decorated our booth with flyers and information about possibilities at Conti. We received especially good feedback on our Meet-the-Manager program, which is going on for graduates these months and will take place for professionals soon.
In addition to the written information we answered most questions directly. Many women asked for possibilities to develop their skills, how to combine working and family life, but also what Conti focuses on and where our locations are. Fortunately we checked most of the questions beforehand so I was able to answer them quickly. On top of that we had two iPads with us to have a look at current vacancies in our career app. Those job offers were then sent to the women via mail. That was very helpful for “unusual” qualifications that you wouldn’t connect with Conti at first sight. I talked to two women that studied environmental studies and told them about one of our projects where we get natural rubber not from rubber trees but from dandelion. Unfortunately there were no vacancies at the moment, but as you can see Conti is not only orange but also very green.
Nailpolish for women
Very sought-after were also our give-aways. We brought nail polish in Conti orange that was gone quickly. But we didn’t have to take a single one of the Conti glasses back home either!
Our booth was visited a lot during the whole day (I hope not only because of the give-aways 😉 ) so that there was little time to focus on my feet which hurt at the end of the day. A day at a fair is something that has nothing to do with my everyday work where I sit at my desk and in meetings quite a lot. But that is what made it so interesting. I was able to tell other women how much fun it is to work as an engineer for Conti! At the end I was happy to have talked to so many women with high potential but also to sit in the car and not stand on my feet anymore.
Next year I will definitely come back to the “women and work”!
